People who are diabetic are not the only people who pay attention to the Glycemic Index (GI). The Glycemic index measures different types of carbohydrates and how fast the foods you eat raise blood sugar levels.

Choosing foods that are low on the Glycemic index, such as sugarless candy and natural chocolates with no sugar, can result in weight loss. Sugarless candy causes little if any fluctuation in blood sugar and insulin levels. In contrast, white flour bread, which is not healthy, has a high GI of 70. White flour would have a rapid effect on blood sugar levels.

Fill up on low sugar treats

It’s important to keep your blood sugar stabilized by eating sugarless candy and natural chocolate for treats because taking a trip to the candy store and filling up on high-sugar treats can raise your appetite.

According to experts, foods fall into three general categories when it comes to the Glycemic Index. Low GI foods, with a GI of 54 or less, cause a slight rise in blood sugar, while Intermediate index foods with a GI of 55-69 cause a medium rise in blood sugar.

Finally, high GI foods with a GI of 70 or more cause a rapid rise in blood sugar. Tuna has a 0 GI, and has no significant carbohydrate content and, thus, no effect on blood sugar levels.

Combine protein and starches

Most experts say you can have a lower the GI if you combine a high GI food, such as doughnuts, with a low GI food, such as chicken.

An apple, which has a lot of fiber, has a low GI of 38, so you would be able to eat an apple solo instead of part of a meal.

But when you eat sugarless candy and chocolates that do not contain added sugar, you don’t have to worry about a rapid rise in blood sugar. Not only will you have satisfied your sweet tooth, you will have tricked your body by indulging in a healthy, natural sugarless candy.

Kids love them, adults love them, and you’ll fall in love with them too! These cute little chocolate favors are very easy and affordable to create on your own. If you purchase chocolate bars in bulk, you can create your own labels with your home computer. Too busy? Have them custom created by your local printer. The candy bars themselves can be milk chocolate with nuts or without nuts. We always suggest nut-free candies, as many people have allergies to certain nuts. Add an image of yourselves and the date of your wedding to each label. Use these chocolate favors as place setters for each guests’ seat!

A Lucky Kiss!

A what? A lucky kiss! Place a scratch-off lottery ticket and a Hershey kiss wrapped in tulle for each guest. Your guests will never expect this scrumptious chocolate wedding favor, as it’s quite unique. Think how happy they’ll be if they’re a winner!

Chocolate Heart Lollipops

You can purchase these little candy favors in bulk. Attach a ribbon with your names and wedding date to each stick. If you’re really on a budget you can make them yourself with a candy mold. It’s easy and it doesn’t require much time.

Chocolate Dipped Spoons

They’re a great accent to any wedding favor, or you can give them as a favor alone with a ribbon that includes your names and the date of your special day. They’re well-loved, as your guests can stir them in their coffee.

Gummi Bears

Nothing fancy here, but everyone loves gummi bears. You can buy them in bulk and wrap them in tulle with embossed ribbon. This is really excellent idea for someone on a tight budget. $30 of Gummi Bears supply approximately 100 guests with candy wedding favors.

Hugs and Kisses Favors

This very inexpensive chocolate wedding favor can simply express your cutest sentiments and make everyone say “awww.” Place Hershey Hugs and Kisses into tulle or mesh, tie them with embroided ribbon and a note that reads: “hugs and kisses from Mr. & Mrs. (last name).”

Potted Jelly Beans
Purchase small terra-cotta planters in bulk. (These plant holders are only about 2” in height). Purchase flavored jelly beans in bulk and place them into the plant holder. Wrap them up in mesh, add a embossed ribbon with your names and wedding date. This is a candy favor that will be well embraced by all of your guests.

A Trip Down Memory Lane: The Sugarless Candy Store

As a young child often one’s fondest memory is entering the candy store or the candy aisle of a grocery store. Bright colored packages abound. The choices seem to be endless.

In Vermont, there are towns with true old fashioned candy stores. Wood plank flooring, maybe a scattering of saw dust, even the occasional pickle barrel! A delightful world filled with choices and choices and choices.

Would it suprise you to find out that the number one choice of candy and candy flavors is not chocolate, but… vanilla! It’s true as unbelievable as it sounds.

Think of all the possibilities staring a child literal face to face since many counters are conveniently put at not adult height, but child hand height. There’s a reason for this, ye old marketing tactic!

Imagine now a candy store counter, child and adult height, filled not with sugar-laden, teeth-decaying, calorie-engourging sweets, but your choice of the finest in sugarless candy and chocolate selections. Is this the dream of a sci-fi movie? No it is not. Nowadays we do have choices - and as time evolves (and rapidly) those choices are ensuring our choice of sugarfree or sugarless no longer means having to accept unappealing flavors and the byproducts of the “sugarless” product. Sweetners are making huge headway. Consumers can find delight in allowing themselves to choose sugarless candy based on pure taste alone. For those that begrudgingly have chosen the sugarfree sweet while gazing longingly at fat-inducing fancies have the satisfaction of full flavor without the rapid waistline growth.

All sorts of artificial sweetners are available on the market today. Unfortunately behind-the-scenes knowledge of these sweetners are never fully revealed to the public. You are most likely aware of just how many articifical sweetners never hold up and are pulled from grocery shelves. Sugar alcohols, the next step beyond, actually build in the blood and, for many, produce unfortunate (and embarassing) side effects.

Watching our waistlines means researching into the best healthy snack choices for ourselves. Read labels, make wise decisions.

People today are very health conscious and eating sugar is avoided or kept to a minimum either due to health conditions like diabetes or, in some cases, from the simple desire to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Chocolates, on the other hand, are the favorite food item of many people and it is very likely you’ll come across individuals where these two contradictory conditions are at loggerheads with each other. That is to say a person likes chocolates but cannot eat them due to the large amounts of sugar that go into the making of mainstream chocolates.

As they say, “where there’s a will, there’s a way,” therefore it is not surprising that an alternative exists for such people, namely the sugarless chocolate. Although the name is self explanatory, that does not mean that such chocolates are not sweet (which would defeat the primary goal of your palette and your love for munching them).

There are several artificial sweetening agents commercially available which can be used to simulate the affect of sweetness on the tongue, but do not have the harmful affects associated with table sugar. Although there is a certain level of uncertainly regarding the safety of such products like saccharin (which was demonstrated to produce cancerous affects under laboratory conditions). Despite the doubts, there does exist several types of sugar alternatives in the market, and these alternatives are being used by manufacturers of food products, including chocolate.

Lucky for most of us wishing to be slim and fit, many of the major producers of chocolate have their sugarless chocolate alternative apart from their mainstream sugared counterparts. The consumer is now given the ability to use their own discretion when deciding which type of chocolate to consume.

Chocolate has a long and illustrious history and people will continue to be drawn to everything chocolate! For diabetics or people with weight problems, chocolate is no longer out of their reach. With care and proper research fine foods once forbidden to many can go back on their diets. From holidays to just a relaxing part of anyone’s day, sugarless products are making it possible for everyone to be happy!

Natural chocolate is a perfect hybrid of words and meaning. But recent examinations of the benefits and makeup of chocolate support the claim that natural chocolate may be good or you. Chocolate serves as a natural relaxer, an antioxidant, and a positive health contributor. Natural chocolate is actually made from the seeds of the cacao tree, commonly derived from cacao beans.

Natural chocolate benefits derive from products pressed from the cocoa bean and not made from the cocoa butter product cooked from the fruits of the cacao tree. Natural chocolate will include the high concentration necessary and associated with European dark chocolate made with less sugar.

If chocolate consumption represents one percent of the American diet, it is from fatty products loaded with sugar. Natural chocolate is more regularly found in bitter chocolate products like baking chocolate, specialty bars and special natural chocolate products found in organic food stores. It is not likely to be in very sweet and sugary chocolate candy or chocolate products with milk added.

Consuming natural chocolate does not share the same dietetic stigma today of consuming candy and other forms, since products used for cake frosting, chocolate chips, and ice cream are filled with fat, sugar and preservatives. To determine if a product contains the benefits of natural chocolate, make sure the ingredients do not contains cocoa butter or dark colorings.

Eating natural chocolate has become a significant choice for a snack. As a meal supplement or dessert, natural chocolate is a snack that is less empty that other fat filled sugary and starchy snacks. This does not mean that any chocolate candy bar automatically applies. Dark chocolate includes falconoid, which is present in natural chocolate but gets filtered out in the processing of other chocolate products such as syrup, powders, and candy.

Natural chocolate exists when no chemicals or alkalis have been applied in the fermentation and manufacturing process, Natural chocolate may be considered something like a glass of wine or a frozen yogurt for enjoyment with a side benefit. Adding natural chocolate cocoa to your morning coffee may keep high blood pressure down, circulation up, and the heart healthier.

The Flavenols and Flavenoids in natural chocolate can exhibit health benefits that mimic prunes, blueberries, and coffee. Natural chocolate may have caffeine in it, but doctors now show that caffeine found in coffee may also have the same kinds of health benefits, include living a year longer and analgesic or serotonin effects on the body.

Diabetics - those people whose bodies refuse to produce enough sugar digesting insulin - have long been banned from enjoying more than a morsel of sugary goodness in any one sitting. But the diabetics out there need not relinquish all candies, for sugar free chocolate is a great option to satisfy the taste buds without harming the body.

Sugarfree chocolate is actually quite tasty, as the millions of consumers, diabetics and those without sugar sensitivity, can attest. For a similar price and almost identical taste, sugarfree chocolate offers candy lovers a less harmful option in the sweet treat category. In fact, sugarfree chocolate can be purchased in ready to eat form, as well as in cooking ingredients. For diabetics, this can mean a return to being able to enjoy the same chocolate taste in sugarfree cakes, cookies, and muffins, as well as being another option for restocking the candy dishes with treats anyone can enjoy.

Surprisingly enough, the absence of traditional, pure sugar does very little to change the taste of the sugarfree chocolate. Besides the expected slight alteration of taste, which is even less noticeable than the difference between cola and diet cola, there is no drawback to choosing the sugarfree over traditional, sugary candies. Even for non-diabetics, sugarfree options can be a great alternative, especially if you have a particularly persistent sweet tooth. After all, everyone knows that too much sugar is detrimental to even the healthiest body, so replacing some cocoa indulgences with sugarfree candy can ease your conscience and your waistline!

In the end, sugarfree chocolate is a great alternative to syrupy candies and treats. The taste, the texture, the price - these are all comparable to the traditional candies. Choosing the healthiest options in foods and desserts is so important, but it is particularly crucial for diabetics, whose bodies can shut down if too much sugar floods their system. Sugarfree options, then, were developed with these bodies in mind. Sugarfree products, though, have gained quite a bit of popularity among many consumers; in fact, from those who have insulin production problems to those who have excellent health, sugarfree chocolate is the perfect remedy for that saccharine desire.

When the rumbling racket in your belly reaches a crescendo, do you reach for chips and soda, or fruit and water? You probably reach for whatever is in sight, and if you are on the go like most Americans these days, snacks and even meals end up being whatever you can get your hands on at the convenience store or drive-thru window. Unfortunately for your body, these high-fat and low-nutritive choices make up the bulk of what we consume, resulting in a host of problems, ranging from excess weight to depleted energy. Stores don’t make it easy for us, either, since the junk food items are right there on every end-cap and at the cash register, too. Nonetheless, it is our choice to consume junk food over healthy snacks.

Healthy snacks require a bit of planning on your part to help you stave off the inevitable late afternoon yearning for chocolate and a can of Coke. The first and most obvious reason to choose healthy snacks is to watch your fat and caloric intake. Take some time to stock up on better choices, like bottled water, apples, oranges, and raisins. Choose foods that can be left in your desk at work, so that every time you need a pick me up, there is a buffet of healthy snacks at your desk. If fruits aren’t your thing, try healthier versions of your favorites; instead of chips, pick up small bags of the baked chips. Unsalted and unbuttered popcorn is another filler that is low in calories and fat. If the thought of giving up your soda is like being told you can no longer live, at least try to substitute it with a diet or low-calorie version.

To minimize the chances that you will reach for an unhealthy and fat laden snack, prepare yourself by stocking up on healthy snacks. In addition to feeling better about your choices, you will be eliminating the mindless snacking that pours on the pounds, and you will find that your energy probably increases, too. With healthy snacks, you will see your energy increases as well, since fatty, sugary snacks can cause a spike in sugar that gives you a rush, which is then followed by a rapid depletion in energy. So to avoid the rising and crashing sugars, the excessive pounds, and the guilt of having made a bad choice, turn instead to healthy snacks.

Yes, we all learned in school that Christopher Columbus discovered the New World. What is not commonly known is that among the treasures that he brought back from his fourth trip to the New World was the cocoa bean. The story goes is that Columbus presented his treasures to the King Fernando, and Queen Isabel of Espana. Among the items in the treasure was the cocoa beans, but the other items such as gold drew their attention. Thus the cocoa remain unnoticed

Approximately twenty years later, Hernan Cortés popularized the cocoa bean, and chocolate drinks. At first the Spanish court did not appreciate the loathsome looking drink, and only after sugar was added to the chocolate did it become popular with the nobility. Of course, the cocoa bean due to the tremendous cost of production was used as currency.

Spain first shipped cocoa seeds commercially in 1585 from Veracruz to Seville. The Spaniards planted the cocoa seeds in their tropical colonies and created a monopoly on chocolate that lasted until the late 16th century, when Spain began to decline as a sea power. The cocao plantations in the New World was utilized to “grow money”. The secret of chocolate was held by having the monks in monasteries grind the beans and by forbidding the export of cocoa and chocolate. These monks kept secret of chocolate for over a century before it spread to the rest of Europe. However, in 1615 when the Spanish Princess Maria Theresa became engaged to Luis XIV of France, she gave her fiancé a gift of chocolate in an elegant chest.

The secret was so well kept that during the Spanish armada’s battles with England and Holland, captured cargo vessels containing cocoa were frequently sunk as having no value. This was because the rest of Europe was not privied to the heavenly chocolate drink. Eventually, in the 1600’s after the gift of chocolate to Luis XIV, chocolate made it to chocolate houses across Europe.

Although the original intentions of the Spanish was not to share the cocoa bean with the world, we are glad that Maria Theresa spilled the beans on the secret. Obviously, the real credit goes to the Mayans, and not the Aztecs for the original discovery.

Little did the indigenous people of present day Mexico, and the Europeans knew, but the cocoa bean has changed the world for the better. The humble bean has created a multi-billion dollar chocolate industry. I thank the Mayans for discovering the bean, and the Spanish for spreading it.

People can give chocolate thank you gifts to show their appreciation for a number of reasons such as: bridal showers, baby showers, participating in wedding parties, doing a job well done, etc. But how can you prepare such a gift?

First, start with a nice tin, paper box, or gift basket. You will use this to hold your chocolate items. If it is reuseable, than it is a great way for the recipient to remember the gift.

Next, you will want to secure your box or gift basket with a liner. Foil or cellophane is perfect for this job.

Now it is time to think about what kind of chocolate you want to give.

Cookies:

Completely chocolate ones

Chocolate chips

Chocolate frosted

Or a variety of the three.

Candy:

Bar form

Little wrapped bites

Hard type that are chocolate flavored

These candies can be milk chocolate, dark chocolate, double chocolate, added with chip, mixed with chocolate and peanut butter, caramel, raisins, nuts such as peanuts, walnuts, cashews, pecans and almonds or even flavors such as mocha, coconut, toffee, and mint flavors. Plus, don’t forget the ever popular chocolate pretzels and malted milk balls.

Yes, you can even bake, make or buy candies and cookies that are sugar free for the more health conscious person.

You can even have your cookies baked onto sticks and then wrapped in cellophane. Stick them into the basket sticking up and they will look like a bouquet of flowers.

You can even buy candy bars from many companies that will imprint messages onto the wrappers for you. This is a great way to display your thanks in writing.

Remember the next time you have to give a thank you gift, think about giving a chocolate thank you gift.
